2019: SOTANG PUBLIC CAMPUS CLEC + 2021: ADAPTING TO DISTANCE LEARNING
A COMPUTER LEARNING ENVIRONMENT CENTER FOR THE RURAL COMMUNITY of SOTANG in SOLOKHUMBU district of Nepal.
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT?
We visited the rural community of Sotang for the first time in 2017, and then again in 2018 and 2019. The path for Sumo Jeeps was not finished at that time, and we had to cross a suspended bridge over the Dudh Koshi River to hike to Sotang. We were introduced to a new remote campus that they had just opened in order to be able to offer a Bachelor of Education, and accept students that had completed Grade 11 and 12. Ishwor Timalsena, College Principal, then made a request: “Would you be able to help us, as the Nepali Education ministry just requested that we taught student teachers in their 4th year ICT, Information Communication Technology, as they want to integrate basic computer skills in their curriculum”. It was impossible to provide a quality ICT education and fulfill the new government rules. We found that notion to be so congruent with today’s world that we made it our primary focus as of 2019. In addition, we believed that internet access was the biggest barrier we would face. Nepal had relied mostly on cell towers to provide internet access through cell phones that were actually flourishing in the hilly regions of Nepal, but not in more remote regions.
WHAT YOUR DONATION WILL SUPPORT
You Donation will support the adaptation we are making based on DISTANCE LEARNING, based on our pilot with Kathmandu University. This is all due to the pandemic and will push our CLEC to be more able to create Online / Zoom / Google meet learning environment, once a dedicated internet access to the CLEC is provided. This school intends to appeal to needy children. The library will enable the kids to increase their knowledge of the world.
